Ebooks for the first nibble

Python is steadily gaining prominence, though not yet in India. Most people here start off with the basics of Java and/or C/C++. In such cases though Python is an ideal language to start off programming with, books that teach programming through Python are not exactly what we have in mind.
For a programmer interested in learning this I’d recommend Byte of Python. It veers a bit towards the language on a Linux platform, but is mainly directed towards any user.
For people starting off with programming itself the “How to think like a Python Programmer” ebook is arguably the best bet.

The next logical step would be “DIve into Python”.

I’m currently toying with Dive into Python and trying to learn BASH scripting to a certain level. The latter will definitely boost my productivity on Ubuntu.
